Despite being America’s fastest growing metropolis, Phoenix corps members find a surprisingly affordable cost of living in the Valley (how locals refer to Greater Phoenix). Average rent for apartments and homes in central Phoenix, Glendale, Mesa, or Tempe can range from $600 for a studio downtown to $2000 for a three-bedroom home in a central historic neighborhood. During regional induction, corps members are given ample time to seek out housing and orient themselves with the Valley. With its more than 1,400 miles of freeways, transportation costs (primarily gas) may figure significantly into a corps members’ budget and average totals can range anywhere from $60 to $175 a month dependent on the commute.

An abundance of apartment complexes means that most corps members find very affordable places to live within days of arriving in Phoenix. Many apartment complexes include swimming pools and covered garages. It is relatively easy to find apartment complexes with other amenities such as Jacuzzis, tennis courts, basketball courts, and workout rooms, in addition to the possibility of a month of free rent that some complexes offer. Some corps members share three or four bedroom houses with small backyards.

About 80 percent of Phoenix corps members live with others corps members.
