Corps members must take and pass subject-specific exams called the PRAXIS II: Professional Assessments for Beginning Teachers. Corps members cannot be placed in a Charlotte-Mecklenburg teaching position without passing scores on their PRAXIS II exam. Applicants assigned to Charlotte will receive further information about exams once they are accepted.
Under the federal No Child Left Behind Act, all corps members must work toward certification during their two-year commitments. Corps members are required to complete six credit hours during the first year of teaching to be eligible to teach a second year. In partnership with the University of North Carolina at Charlotte (UNCC), corps members enroll in university-level courses to work toward their initial teacher licensure or a Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT). In addition, after meeting certain residency requirements, all licensure courses at UNCC are available at no cost to the corps members.
